I Am Me and You are You

Part of becoming more fully ourselves is learning where we end and another person begins.

I can care about you without carrying you.
I can love you without becoming you.
I can listen without losing my own voice.

Your feelings belong to you.
My feelings belong to me.

Your path is yours to walk, and mine is mine.

In psychology, this is sometimes called individuation—the gradual process of becoming more distinctly ourselves while still remaining connected to others.

It is not separation for the sake of distance.
It is connection without disappearing.

The clearer I become about what is mine and what is yours, the more freely I can choose how I want to respond.

I am me.
You are you.

And perhaps there is something very freeing in letting that be.
