I'm Not Comfortable With That

One of the simplest and most effective ways to set a boundary is to say:

"I'm not comfortable with that."

No lengthy explanation is required.

No debate is necessary.

No defense is needed.

Simply stating discomfort communicates that a limit has been reached.

Healthy people may ask questions, seek clarification, or express disappointment. Yet they generally respect the boundary.

Unhealthy people often do something different.

They pressure.

They argue.

They minimize.

They tell you that you are overreacting, being difficult, or making a big deal out of nothing.

In this way, boundaries reveal information.

The issue is not whether another person agrees with the boundary. The issue is whether they can respect it.

Boundary violations exist on a spectrum. They can range from pressure to attend a social event that does not feel right, to repeated attempts to override a person's wishes, to the most serious forms of coercion and assault.

The details may differ, but the underlying pattern is the same:

One person communicates a limit.

The other person decides whether that limit matters.

"I'm not comfortable with that" is a reasonable thing to say when it is true.

And another person should not be too comfortable pushing past it.

Respect begins where pressure ends.

NO THANK YOU- I’M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT
